With a tablet, users can perform the same basic functions as with a netbook computer, namely web browsing and document editing. Tablets stand out, however, in their portable design.
Netbooks are small and light, but try using one on a crowded subway. A tablet is truly a "go anywhere" device because of the handheld design and single touchscreen interface, similar to what you would find on a touchscreen smartphone. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Samsung's first entry into the tablet market, has a 7-inch screen that's roughly the same size as a paperback novel - yet it's super thin with a depth of just 0.47 inches (1.2 cm). That means users can stay productive during the morning commute, while in line at the grocery store, or wherever they happen to be.
Apps, apps and more apps
So, tablets can go anywhere, but what can they do? With the range of applications available, it seems they can do almost anything. Tablets are often preloaded with productivity apps for:
- Email (syncs with work and personal email like Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and others
- Calendar (syncs with Outlook, Google and others)
- Notes/memos
- News and weather
- Document viewing and editing for common file types like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF
Accessories bring more mileage
There are tablet cases in every colour and style, but manufacturers have also rolled out some very practical accessories. With a car mounting kit, a tablet can double as a GPS or in-vehicle entertainment system. Keyboard accessories, like keyboard docking stations, make typing even easier for emailing, instant messaging or working on documents.
